Shafqat Mahmood Announces Retirement from Politics

In a recent announcement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Shafqat Mahmood, former federal minister and a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), declared his retirement from politics.

This decision, as he stated, comes after extensive deliberation and is made independently, with no intentions of joining another political party.

Mahmood embarked on his political journey 34 years ago, following his resignation from government service.

Now, he intends to devote his remaining years to writing and teaching. He made it clear that his retirement is strictly from political life, driven by considerations of time and age, and he supports the notion that the younger generation should take the helm in politics.

Reflecting on his extensive political career, Mahmood shared the highs and lows he experienced.

He served as a member of both the Senate and National Assembly, held federal and provincial ministerial positions, and even faced imprisonment.

Despite these challenges, he expressed satisfaction in having fulfilled his responsibilities with integrity.

Although Mahmood had filed nomination papers for the National Assembly Constituency 130 and the Punjab Assembly Constituency 170 in Lahore, he ultimately chose to withdraw from the election.

His decision to retire signals a shift in focus towards his personal passions and away from the political arena.

In April 2022, following the fall of the PTI government, former Prime Minister Imran Khan announced a “long march” to protest against the government.

However, participation was significantly lower than expected. Mahmood admitted that the party was unprepared for the march at the time.

Later, on June 3rd, Mahmood, who was then the federal education minister and PTI’s Punjab president, resigned from his party position due to health reasons.

Media reports suggested that PTI founder Imran Khan had requested his resignation due to his failure to effectively mobilize public support in Punjab for the protest.

Mahmood’s announcement marks the end of a notable political career marked by service, dedication, and a strong commitment to public duty.

As he embarks on a new phase of his life dedicated to writing and teaching, his departure creates an opportunity for new leadership to emerge within the PTI and Pakistan’s political sphere.

With his departure, there is now room for fresh faces and perspectives to shape the future of the party and the country.

As he steps aside, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and commitment to his vision, providing a solid foundation for the incoming leaders to build upon.

This transition not only signifies a personal transformation for him but also ushers in a new era of possibilities for the party and the nation.

As he transitions into a new chapter of his life focused on writing and teaching, his departure paves the way for fresh leadership within the PTI and Pakistan’s political landscape.
