In a powerful move that underscores her commitment to sustainable fashion, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has taken her passion for style to the next level by becoming an investor in Cesta Collective, a handbag brand known for its ethical practices.
In a candid interview with The New York Times, the 43-year-old revealed her dedication to discovering and supporting emerging designers, further solidifying her influence in the fashion world.
During the interview, Meghan Markle shared insights into her process of discovering new fashion brands.
“I spend a lot of time just Googling, looking for brands,” she stated, highlighting her proactive approach in searching for designers, particularly those from different regions.
This curiosity and passion have led her to Cesta Collective, a brand that has caught her eye not just for its style but for its ethical commitment.
Cesta Collective’s signature basket bags, which have become a fashion staple, are handcrafted by women in Rwanda, who earn between 500-700% above the national average salary, according to the brand’s website.
The final touches are added in Italy, ensuring each piece is a blend of global craftsmanship and luxury.
Markle first showcased her support for the brand in May 2023, when she was seen carrying their Bucket Bag ($790) during a dinner in Santa Barbara with Prince Harry and celebrity friends Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz.
The bag’s appearance led to a sales surge, with the product selling out rapidly. Erin Ryder, co-founder of Cesta Collective, recalled the moment, saying, “We had more sales in one day than we’ve ever had.”
This overwhelming response prompted Markle to become the brand’s first external investor.
Reflecting on her influence in the fashion industry, Markle recounted how her choice to carry a Strathberry Midi Tote ($845) in 2017 led to it selling out in just 11 minutes.
This experience changed her perspective on fashion, making her more conscious of the impact her choices have on emerging brands.
Markle emphasized the importance of using her platform to uplift lesser-known designers and brands that deserve wider recognition.
By simply wearing an item, such as a pair of earrings, she believes she can make a significant difference.
