Female Engineers Make History to Install First Solar Roof System in Pakistan

In a groundbreaking achievement, five exceptional female engineers have etched their names in history by successfully installing a 24-kilowatt solar system on the roof of Karachi’s Hussaini Orphanage.

This project marks the first time in Pakistan’s history that women have taken the lead in a solar roof installation, setting a new standard for female participation in the energy sector.

This pioneering effort was undertaken by graduates of NED University, with hands-on support from KfW DEG Impuls and Develop.

The engineers, Areeba Rashid, Iman Batool, Farhan Anjum, Muskan Iqbal, and Rahemeen Haider Ali, have not only set a new precedent but have also become the first women in Pakistan to receive payment for solar roof installation work.

This milestone is part of the broader Ladies Fund Energy initiative, aimed at empowering female engineers and integrating them into the traditionally male-dominated energy sector.

This historic project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Dawood Global Foundation (DGF) and Ladies Fund Energy Pvt. Ltd., with critical support from KfW DEG Impuls and Develop.

The initiative not only trained 28 female engineers from NED University but also provided them with hands-on experience, allowing them to transition from interns to official installers.

The success of this project is further underscored by the overwhelming interest it generated, with 86 female engineers waitlisted for future courses.

Dr. Mohsin Aman, a recognized expert in solar technology, led the training program at NED University, where the engineers received world-class instruction in “Solar Roof Installation.”

The project’s success has garnered significant interest, with 86 additional female engineers now waitlisted for future training opportunities.

Tara Azra Dawood, CEO of Ladies Fund Energy, emphasized the dual objectives of the initiative: to train and employ female engineers while promoting their involvement in the broader energy sector.

Dawood expressed her commitment to expanding this program to include young women from interior Sindh, furthering the mission of gender inclusivity in Pakistan’s growing green energy landscape.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, who attended the ceremony as the chief guest, praised the achievement of these dynamic female engineers for their groundbreaking work.

He announced plans to support further training for 100 female engineers at NED University and invited Ladies Fund Energy to bid on future solarization projects for Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) buildings signalling a promising future for women in Pakistan’s energy sector.

This project not only signifies a major step forward for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Pakistan but also contributes to the country’s ongoing efforts to embrace renewable energy solutions and create a more sustainable future.
