Dubai to Introduce Over 600 New Buses Under a Dh1.1 Billion RTA Contract

Dubai is set to expand its public transport fleet significantly with a new contract awarded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Valued at Dh1.1 billion, this contract will see the addition of 636 new buses to the emirate’s roads in 2024 and 2025.

These buses are designed to meet European specifications and are noted for their low carbon emissions, aligning with Dubai’s ambitious environmental goals.

A highlight of this new fleet is the introduction of 40 electric buses, the largest and first of their kind in the UAE.

This initiative marks a significant step towards the RTA’s objective of increasing public transport usage to 25% of all journeys by 2030.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that these new buses will play a crucial role in making public transport the preferred mode of mobility in Dubai.

The new buses are equipped with advanced technological features designed to enhance safety and efficiency.

Among these is the Driver Behaviour Monitoring System (Raqeeb), which aims to improve driver conduct through continuous monitoring.

Additionally, the buses will feature an Automated Passenger Counting (APC) system to accurately track passenger numbers and curb fare evasion.

Driver identity authentication will also be linked to the operating system to ensure security and accountability.

Al Tayer highlighted that the new buses align with the RTA’s Public Transport Zero Emissions Strategy, which aims to convert all buses, taxis, and limousines to zero-emission vehicles by 2050.\

This strategy includes a 100% conversion of public transport buses to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

The contract encompasses the purchase of various types of buses to serve different needs across the city.

This includes 40 electric buses from Zhongtong, 450 city service buses (comprising 400 MAN buses, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, and 50 Zhongtong buses), 76 double-decker buses from Volvo, and 70 articulated buses from Isuzu Anadolu.

These buses are intended to enhance geographic coverage, serve high-density urban areas, and increase occupancy rates.

The new fleet adheres to Gulf specifications and is fitted with environmentally friendly Euro 6 engines.

These vehicles, classified under the United Nations Vehicle Category Class II, offer operational flexibility for both urban and inter-urban routes.

They feature low floors for easy access, bike racks, special seating for children, Wi-Fi service, and mobile phone charging points, ensuring a comfortable and convenient travel experience for all passengers.

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, noted that the buses are designed to provide exceptional service, featuring outstanding interior finishes and wide seats.

Furthermore, the RTA is developing a UAE Fuel Consumption Protocol to compare fuel consumption across different bus types, aiming for greater efficiency and sustainability.

This substantial investment in public transport is in line with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, and is overseen by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.

Their vision underscores the importance of sustainable and efficient public transport in Dubai’s future development.

In summary, the Dh1.1 billion contract for 636 new buses signifies a major step forward for Dubai’s public transport system.
