US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has alerted G7 allies about a potential coordinated attack on Israel by Iran and Hezbollah, which could occur as early as Monday, according to recent reports.
During a conference call on Sunday, Blinken urged his counterparts to apply urgent diplomatic pressure on Iran and Hezbollah to mitigate possible retaliatory actions. He highlighted that limiting their strikes could prevent a full-scale war.
Following the recent killing of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed retaliation. Sources indicate that Blinken expects their response within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Blinken also informed G7 foreign ministers about the recent discussions on a ceasefire deal, noting that the Biden administration believed they were close to a breakthrough before the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
He reassured the G7 that the additional US forces in the region are solely for defensive purposes.
In response, the G7 issued a statement urging all parties to avoid further violence, reduce tensions, and engage in de-escalation efforts, stressing that escalation benefits no nation.
Over the weekend, Israel took measures to prepare for a potential attack. General Michael Kurilla of US Central Command is set to arrive in Israel on Monday to support the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held a critical meeting with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and military and intelligence leaders.
Netanyahu condemned Iran’s actions, stating, “Iran and its minions are attempting to surround us with terrorism. We are committed to resisting them on all fronts. Those who seek to harm us will face severe consequences.”
